Porcupine Tree - ‘The Incident’: Track-By-Track Album Preview

Hammer scribe Dom Lawson weighs in with his report on the new album from prog-metal lords, Porcupine Tree.

With no messing around whatsoever, here’s Dom Lawson’s track-by-track guide to the Porcupine Tree. ‘The Incident’ will be released on September 14th.

A 55-minute ‘song cycle’ designed to be consumed in one fulsome hit, ‘The Incident’ is the first and dominant part of the new Porcupine Tree album. The second disc will feature four more new songs – ‘Flicker’, ‘Bonnie The Cat’, ‘Black Dahlia’ and ‘Remember Me Lover’, but here we take a stroll through ‘The Incident’ itself. Prepare to be squashed by a large block of awesomeness.

‘The Incident’

i. ‘Occam’s Razor’

As intros go, this is both startling and thrilling. A huge, dramatic chord is pounded out threefold with great force before a delicate guitar motif and some eerie effects slither from the speakers.

ii. ‘The Blind House’

The album’s first song proper begins with explosive introductory riffs that lead into a typically plaintive and ethereal Steven Wilson vocal melody. And then the chorus erupts, and it’s a cast-iron belter, redolent of Deftones in the guitar chord department but still unmistakably Porcupine Tree. Midway through, the song is stripped right down to some programmed clicks and clangs that add a slightly unreal and chilling Radiohead/Aphex Twin vibe to an already stunning opening.

iii. ‘Great Expectations’

A simple combination of acoustic guitar and poignant lyrics sung with typical grace and refinement by Wilson morph into soaring guitar work subtly reminiscent of ‘70s prog lords King Crimson, but bigger, brighter and more lustrous.

iv. ‘Kneel And Disconnect’

The flipside to Great Expectations, this piano-led ballad barely scraped two minutes, but it’s a brilliantly executed slice of sober melancholy that ends with a decidedly creepy piano melody…

v. ‘Drawing The Line’

…which leads into this sublime chunk of schizophrenia, with its elegantly percussive and downbeat verses and choruses that build from urgent, suspended chords to an irresistible sense of motoring momentum. Ridiculously catchy but genuinely eerie with it, this is one of the few songs on the album that would still make sense in isolation.

vi. ‘The Incident’

Porcupine Tree get their NIN-style electro-sinister vibe on, with some bleak and skittering electronics, a lurching, menacing groove and lyrics that hint at detachment from emotion and a creeping sense of fear. When Wilson sings “I just want to be loved…”, it’s hard to avoid the sense that he might not mean it in a good way. Then the gnarly metal riffs start to poke through the sonic mist, as if Meshuggah have invaded the studio and hijacked the song halfway through, adding another layer of stark horror. Stunning stuff.

vii. ‘Your Unpleasant Family’

With darkly humorous lyrics leading into a bold and triumphant sounding instrumental passage replete with sky-prodding guitar solo, this is a cleverly-crafted interlude that melts into…

viii. ‘The Yellow Windows Of The Evening Train’

…an ingenious collage of looped melodic shimmers and pulsing keyboards; a moment of unsettling respite before the album’s towering centrepiece.

ix. ‘Time Flies’

“I was born in ’67…the year of Sgt Pepper and Are You Experienced?” is one of the most ear-grabbing opening lines you’ll hear this year, and the epic, 11-minute song that follows is simply one of the best things Porcupine Tree have ever released. Full of the melodic simplicity and pathos that has always been present in the band’s best work, this is also a deceptively complex piece of music that veers from gently undulating jangle to cascading crescendos smothered in bubbling Hammond and on to a rumbling middle section peppered with low-end twang and an escalating atmosphere of dread and foreboding. Nice.

x. ‘Degree Zero Of Liberty’

The huge chords from ‘Occam’s Razor’ return, with added weight and yet more spine-tingling ambience, before a lilting guitar passage that bears more than a passing resemblance to Opeth at their mellowest drifts serenely by, preparing you for the head-mangling insanity of…

xi. ‘Octane Twisted’

…this. It begins as a restrained reprise of moments from earlier in the album, but soon erupts into a series of hammering riffs, thudding tribal drums and a hair-raising level of aggression from a band normally associated with the subtle approach. A juddering one-note riff that would be funky if it wasn’t so damn peculiar provides a rhythmic red line between the song’s more melodic moments. Again, there are definite shades of Opeth here, but this is less progressive death metal than pitch-black left-field rock.

xii. ‘The Séance’

Another melodic retread echoing an earlier part of the album, this does exactly what it says on the paranormal tin, evoking the shiver-inducing atmosphere of a chat with the spirit world beyond, shifting midway through from minor chord sobriety to…

xiii. ‘Circle Of Manias’

…an angular and brutish acoustic guitar figure that transforms into another of those infectious Meshuggah-style offbeat riffs, that spirals up and away into a night sky of interwoven grooves. Porcupine Tree might not be a metal band in the strictest sense of the word, but they do metal as well as anyone out there.

xiv. ‘I Drive The Hearse’

The mood suddenly shifts from threatening thump to gorgeous elegance, as ‘The Incident’ glides to a sorrowful but satisfying conclusion with this simply beautiful closing ballad. In a sane world, this would be a huge hit single. As it is, it’s one final moment of perfectly executed melodic genius at the end of a frankly staggering 55 minutes of music.

Down Bassist To Sit Out US Tour

Former Pantera and current Down bassist Rex Brown will sit out the band’s forthcoming tour ‘to address personal issues’.

Here’s the full statement from Down’s Rex Brown:

“To the Down Brotherhood,
It is with my deepest apologies to let you know that I will not be joining the band on the 1st leg (Aug 3 to Aug 22) of the forthcoming US/Canada tour. It has been mutually agreed upon between myself and the guys that I take this time to address some personal issues. Make no mistake I will be joining my brothers on the 2nd leg of the tour and in the studio in the very near future. This is of utmost importance at this time. Thank you all for your support and understanding. I will see y’all really soon!
With much respect,
Rex Brown”

There’s no word on who will replace Brown at the current point in time. Hammer wishes him all of the best.

Dave Mustaine Talks AC/DC

The mighty Megadeth frontman talks about his love for AC/DC and the difference between the live shows of ‘deth and DC!

“I love AC/DC and I’ve always been a fan of AC/DC,” says Mustaine. “Bon Scott was my frontman. I love and respect Brian, but it’s the same record. They’ve been making the same record for 20 years. I love ‘em, but it’s the same stuff, so you don’t need to buy the record, just go to the concert. With us, it’s kind of like the concert’s always the same but the records change! Because we go out live and what do people want us to do? They want to hear Holy Wars, they want to hear Rust In Peace, they want to hear stuff off of that record…guys, I’ve got 12 records and I can’t fit all of that stuff into one hour! There’s over 100 songs to play! “Hey, play this song!” Yeah, like I’m gonna just remember that song out of the blue! Do I look like a fuckin’ jukebox?”

“I remember we were in Germany one time and it was the anniversary of Bon Scott’s death and we said ‘Let’s do an AC/DC song tonight!’ and we did Problem Child,” explains Mustaine. “About halfway through that song I realised I’d forgotten how high his voice is when he’s singing. So when I was done with that song I went back and I told Shawn (Drover, Megadeth drummer) ‘Don’t ever let me do that again!’ Ha ha!”

Megadeth will release their brand new album, ‘Endgame’, on September 14th

Mastodon-Oblivion (Official Music Video) From new album crack the skye

Sonisphere Reviews: Metallica

Sunday night’s headliners kick all kinds of ass at Knebworth!

Metallica

Opening with ‘Blackened’, ‘Creeping Death’, ‘Fuel’, ‘Of Wolf and Man’ and ‘Fade to Black’, Metallica hit the ground running in a set that just doesn’t let up from the get-go. To not beat around the bush too much, Metallica have hit our shores quite a few times over the course of the past year (indeed, your reviewer has seen them 5 times since last year’s headline performance at Reading) and for the guys to still be able to make standards like ‘Sad But True’ and ‘One’ sound crushingly heavy and massively engaging deserves a certain amount of kudos.

The highlight of Metallica’s set comes when the band drop ‘Dyer’s Eve’ from ‘…And Justice For All’ for the very first time on UK soil. Played at an unrelenting pace, arguably the heaviest of all Metallica tracks was nothing short of astounding. If you ever fancy dropping it into the set on future visits, we certainly won’t complain guys!

A special mention has to go to Kirk Hammett too. If there was a man of the match award for Sonisphere, he’d definitely pick it up for an absolutely flawless display.

Paying homage to former Knebworth legends Queen in the shape of ‘Stone Cold Crazy’ and finishing on a ‘Kill ‘Em All’ one-two of ‘Hit The Lights’ and ‘Seek And Destroy’, Sonisphere ends on the biggest band possible.

Same time next year? You betcha!

Lamb Of God: F*ck Limp Bizkit!

Yesterday’s war of words between Machine Head and Limp Bizkit boiled over and now Willie Adler from the mighty Lamb Of God has had his say on Limp Bizkit.

The following excerpt was taken from an interview with Komodo Rocks:

Willie Adler: “I’m glad (Machine Head) came back on. It’s a matter of… they just didn’t wanna open up for Limp Bizkit, and I agree with them. I wouldn’t wanna open up for Limp Bizkit! They’ve been out of the scene for so long, I mean, who cares? Who cares about Limp Bizkit? I’m not interested in Limp Bizkit! You tell me man! Is that crowd interested?

Komodo Rock: So you don’t support it then?

Willie Adler: “No! Fuck those dudes! Fuck that band, and fuck all the people who work for that fuckin’ band!”

Behemoth Reveal New Album Details

Behemoth reveal cover artwork and release date for their new album, ‘Evangelion’.

Behemoth will release ‘Evangelion’ through Nuclear Blast on August 10th.

In a statement, Behemoth frontman Nergal has said:

“Evangelion combines a pure art form with a direct message. It was also important for us to ensure that the graphical presentation did justice to the record. Again, we have worked with Tomasz Danilowicz who has created his best illustration yet for BEHEMOTH. The picture is of The Great Harlot of Babylon riding the seven-headed beast. Saints bow before her in worship whilst the tablets of the Ten Commandments lie broken at her feet. It represents our vision and the interpretation of the New Testament parable where the “Whore of Babylon” is a symbol of rebellion and resistance against God.”

“I am fascinated by stories whose source lies in the Bible and we have used biblical symbolism, coupled with my own experience and outlook, in our lyrics or on the covers of previous Behemoth records. I love to juggle with meanings and play around with symbolism which is exactly what I have done in this case. The main character of our new cover is an archetype of disobedience, individualism, self-determination and a free, unfettered will – these are universal keywords which are typical and crucial in understanding the character of our works, life as a whole and the true nature of man.”

Thrash Metal Causes Man 3 Heart Attacks In One Day

You couldn’t script this story from the Telegraph.

A musician with a heart defect has been warned his passion for extremely loud thrash metal could put his life in danger after he suffered three cardiac arrests in one day.

Ryan Spearman, bass player with the Gnar Dogs, has been advised to avoid loud, amplified music, energetic moshing and heavy riffing, in case the excitement brings on another - possibly lethal - attack.

The only thing to say at this juncture is “Slay-er! Slay-er! Slay-er!”. Oh and stay out of the pit, dude

song of the day- killing in the name of by rage against the machine

When Mustaine Met Ferrell

Dave Mustaine will be working on the new Will Ferrell movie, ‘Land Of The Lost’.

Dave Mustaine has revealed that he will be contributing new music to the upcoming Will Ferrell movie, ‘Land Of The Lost’. ‘LOTL’ sees Ferrell playing a doctor who is sucked into a space-time vortex that leads him back to pre-historic times where he must escape a world of dinosaurs to get back to our time.

Mustaine says of the collaboration: “I’m going to be working on the new Will Ferrell movie, Land Of The Lost… and going to be putting some music on that. I went and saw the movie last week and it was hilarious. I loved it. I love Will Ferrell, think he’s hilarious anyways. But yeah, we’re getting ready to send some music up to these guys right now and you’re listening to some in the background, and then I’ll be heading up there this week to hopefully finish all this off with their guys. And man, how exciting for me.”

Megadeth are continuing work on their new album with producer Andy Sneap. The as-yet untitled effort is due late summer/early autumn.

Download Organizer Talks 2010 Festival, FNM Reunion & Future Of Download

This is one interview not to be missed for everyone with even a passing interest in this year’s Download festival.

Download organizer Andy Copping has had a full and frank interview posted on the official Download website. Discussions in the interview reveal acts that may play in 2010, why Faith No More will be making their comeback at Brixton and not Download and much, much more.

Highlights from the interview include:

Who will play next year’s festival:

“Already I’ve got one act who will get confirmed fairly quickly, and there’s another headline act for 2010 that I’ll have confirmed by November.”

On Download’s success with pulling in big names:

“The fact that the festival is fairly well established now, and that more bands of a higher calibre want to play the festival, it does make the job slightly easier, because I’ve got more to have a go at – so I’m lucky in that respect. And I think that once the festival has a better reputation than it has now – you know, a little bit of heritage, it’ll make the job slightly easier than if I was going out cold with a new festival.”

On Faith No More’s Reunion:

“Faith No More’s an interesting one, because we were actually talking to them last year for 2008, but it became pretty apparent that we weren’t going to get them in time. I’d started the whole ball rolling, getting the band talking again – they weren’t even talking as a band 18 months ago! We’ve got some contacts with Mike Patton, who’s really the anchor of the whole thing in getting them all back together, so we made contact with him, and he was making the right noises.”

“So I guess that I was kind of a catalyst in getting them all back together, and was hoping that it would go quicker than it actually did.I got a call towards the end of 2008: would we be interested in Faith No More for 2009? And of course I was overjoyed and said “absolutely 100%”, so it was a good thing that we started the process so early, and at least managed to secure them for this year.”

On FNM playing Brixton prior to Download:

“The main reason for this gig was that the band wanted to play a rehearsal. What am I gonna do, say “sorry guys, you’re not going to do a rehearsal, it’s just going to be Download” - and lets just say I did put my heels in and say “you can only play Download this year”, and they weren’t quite ready because they hadn’t done a proper dress rehearsal?”

“I think it’s a shame if people are disappointed. The reality is we gave people who had a ticket for Download the opportunity to buy a ticket for the Brixton show before anyone else, which we thought was the only fair way of doing it.I think that people who are upset about it should look at it sensibly, and think about the reasons why it’s happening, which is so they can put on an even better performance at Download.”

On the future of Download:

“We seem to be growing year on year, and I think that as long as there’s good rock bands coming through we’ll carry on strong. Look, I booked the Prodigy in 2006 and people wanted to hang me out to dry – they wanted to shoot me, kill me. “Why you booking a band like Prodigy?” Let me tell you, in 2006 Prodigy were one of, if not THE band of the weekend – amazing. I book them this year, not one complaint about it, other than from people saying “please don’t let them clash with anyone, because we all want to go and see them”.”

“It just shows you that in the space of 3 years people have gone from “why are you booking this kind of act” to “this is the band we want to go see”. Same with Pendulum, I booked them last year and I was getting all kinds of abuse. Once again, probably one of the bands of the festival last year.”

For the full and frank interview, click here!

Download will take place on June 12th - 14th at Donington and will feature sets from Faith No More, Slipknot, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, The Prodigy, Limp Bizkit, Motley Crue, Marilyn Manson, Korn, ZZ Top, Down, Killswitch Engage, Journey, Clutch and many, many more.

Slipknot And The Prodigy Will Not Clash At Download

Download organizer confirms that you will be able to catch both Slipknot and The Prodigy at this year’s Download festival!

Festival-goers who have been quick to criticize Download for putting main-stage headliners Slipknot and second-stage headliners The Prodigy on at the same time, will be delighted to learn that the two will not clash at this year’s festival.

“Well it’s interesting that people are calling it a ‘clash’ without knowing the cold, hard facts,” says Download festival organizer, Andy Copping. “The reality is that when Prodigy finish, there’ll be a 5 minute window, then Slipknot start – so there is no clash.”

“I was very aware of this when booking the festival, and this has happened in years gone by – I do my very best to stop clashes,” he continues. “I personally want to see as many bands as I can at Download, because I’m a fan. It’s very difficult. You try to do something that you perceive is musically different, and believe me, there’s something very, very musically different between Slipknot and Prodigy, but people want to see both acts – and that’s absolutely fine. I have to deal with that, and the way I’ve dealt with it is Prodigy will finish their set, and then there’ll be a 5 minute window where you’ll have the time to go and see Slipknot before they start.”

Steel Panther Album Guide

A track-by-track analogy of one of the greatest albums of 2009.

Steel Panther will release their riotous album ‘Feel the Steel’ on June 8th. They’ll also be playing Download and also taking in a special show at an intimate London album on June 16th.

For now though, you’ll have to make do with our track-by-track guide to the band’s kick-ass new album ‘Feel The Steel’.

Death To All But Metal

High-octane metal straight from the Sunset Strip’s heyday. Papa Roach, Madonna, Blink 182 and Sheryl Crow all take a kicking, but the Panther save their best lines for Kanye West and 50 Cent.

Best lyric: “50 Cent’s a fag, so is Kanye West/shooting hot sperm on each other’s chest/death to all but metal!”

Asian Hooker

Can you argue with a glam-metal stomp that rhymes South Korea and gonorrhoea? Nope, us neither.

Best lyric: “Find a geisha girl/Take her for a whirl/Wrap a tuna roll on my dick/And the bitch is on her knees”

Community Property

The first step into ballad territory is like ‘Every Rose Has It’s Thorns’ evil cousin. There won’t be a dry eye in the house after this one.

Best lyric: “My heart belongs to you/my love is pure and true/my heart belongs to you/but my cock is community property”

Eyes Of A Panther

Widdling like a cat after you’ve force-fed it Jack Daniels straight out of the bottle, this is a straight-up rocker that doesn’t contain the usual piss-taking.

Best lyric: Nope, they’re actually semi-serious on this one.

Fat Girl

A lament for a woman with a penchant for doughnuts. Pure Whitesnake, it’s worth noting that while the tunes here have lyrics that are fucking hilarious all the way through, the songs themselves are killer.

Best lyric: “I want to choke on that body if you’ll only let me in/I want to sink my summer sausage into that double chin”

Eatin’ Ain’t Cheatin’

It’s a fair point, isn’t it? We can’t imagine that it’d hold much weight as your girlfriend chases you down the road with a lead pipe though.

Best lyric: “She rocked my stick and I blew my load/But right after honey, I came home”

Party All Day

If Jon Bon Jovi hears this, he’s going to shit out his spleen in anger! The Sambora-baiting guitar solo is one of the greatest moments on the whole album. If only Bon Jovi still sounded this good…

Best lyric: “Woooooah! Hey! Hey! Hey!/Fuck all night and party all day!

Turn Out The Lights

It may or may not be another song about fucking. Ok, so it IS another song about fucking, but who’s counting. This one’s about having sex with someone so ugly that you have to turn out the lights to take away from how minging they are.

Best lyric: “I think I’m gonna hurl/Jesus Christ, I hope that you’re a girl”

Stripper Girl

This could be a huge worldwide smash that ends us up as a stadium ballad…if they allowed songs on the radio where the lyrics eolved around strippers and cocaine.

Best lyric: “Sometimes you think that I’m a jerk/When you catch me fucking your friends from work/I’ll be there to catch you when you fall/If you buy me a cellphone you can give me a call”

The Shocker

Strutting like a peacock with a boner (do peacocks get boners? Answers on a postcard…), The Shocker is the best pop-metal song to ever be written about an extreme sex position.

Best lyric: “Two in the pink and one in the stink/That’s called The Shocker!”

Girl From Oklahoma

An acoustic ballad to end the album in the ‘More than Words’ vein of things. Quite frankly, if you can hear this song without LOLZing at any point, you have some serious issues.

Best lyric: the whole bloody thing. Every line on it is absolute gold.

Steel Panther will release ‘Feel the Steel’ on June 8th

Devin Townsend: “I Want To Make My Next Record Sound Like Nickelback”

You can double-take now, but Devin Townsend has assured us that the next part of his four-album concept record will sound like Nickelback. Oh and he also talks about Chad Kroeger’s penis. We shit you not.

Speaking exclusively to Metal Hammer, Devin Townsend had the following to say about the next installment of his concept record:

“I’m from Vancouver and Nickelback are from Vancouver and he (Chad Kroeger) came up to the studio. I just look at Nickelback and I think “how are 40 million people buying this? What does it say about Canada? What does it say about all of this shit!?”

“I had a real think about this and I thought that I would go out and buy the record. Maybe it’s some sort of high-art that I’m not getting. So I got it and it sounds phenomenal! Mutt Lange did it and Randy Staub did it, it sounds incredible, but every song is about his penis!”

“Sex sells and I understand that but I started getting a real dark energy off of the record. It’s like “we’re making money and this is how you make money”, so this next record, I want to make it sound like the Nickelback record and I want to have chorus’s like the Nickelback record, but I want the lyrics to be about infinity and quantum mechanics.”

“The whole point of this is to say “sure, that sells but is it the aesthetics that sell or is it you singing about your penis because if it’s you singing about your penis, then I’m going to know right away”. If it’s about the penis then I’m not going to sell shit, but if it’s about the sound then maybe I’ll sell tonnes of it!”

This will be the follow-up to Devin’s spectacular album, ‘Ki’, which is set for release on May 22nd. For the full interview, be sure to return on Friday for the Metal Hammer podcast.

Amon Amarth isuues update

Swedish Viking metallers AMON AMARTH have issued the following tour update:

"We just completed a very successful US tour and wanted to thank everyone for coming out to the shows! It was great to play at the places we missed on the fall tour and places we haven’t been to in a very long while or before!

We had great support bands. We’d like to thank and raise our horns to them!

After the US tour we went straight to Buenos Aires for our very first show in South and Central America. We’ve heard from other bands about how great it is but we never expected it to be THIS good! Amazing crowds every night and really great people everywhere!

At the present moment, the show in Mexico City will happen as planned. Things have seemed to cool down a bit. As long as it’s safe for us and our fans to do the show, we'll gladly take to the Mexican stage!"

Amon Amarth's upcoming tour schedule is as follows:

May
10 - Sao Paulo, Brazil - Citibank Hall
12 - Caracas, Venezuela – Ateneo de Caracas
14 - Bogota, Colombia - Teatro Metropol
16 - San Jose, Costa Rica - The City Club
17 - Mexico City, Mexico - Circo Volador

Behemoth complete tracking Evangelion

Behemoth have completed tracking their much anticipated new album, “Evangelion", at Radio Gdansk in Poland.

Nergal is flying to UK on May 12th to join Colin Richardson who’s currently mixing the record at Miloco Studios, in London.

Commented Nergal "I've just finished tracking down the vocals for "Evangelion". My chords are worn out and I can hardly speak but at the same time I'm sooo happy and satisfied with the way it turned out this time. I think there was something missing in my vocal performance on the previous record, "The Apostasy". With "Evangelion" I made sure it doesn't sound just brutal…songs are more diverse and so are my vocals. There's definitely more emotions and expression in it. You’ll be surprised!"

SKYNYRD'S BASSIST PASSES AWAY

Ean Evans, bassist for Lynyrd Skynyrd, died on May 7th after battling cancer. He was 48 years old, and had played with Cupid, and the Outlaws. He joined Skynyrd in 2001, after Leon Wilkenson died. Since the band lost two members this year, keyboardist Billy Powell died a few months ago, it’s rather uncertain, for the time being, whether the band will play in Europe this summer

yngwie johan malmsteen and...the guitar's on fire

metal's most defying moments

Come and check out our list of the most defining moments in metal.

Terry Reid turns down singer spot in Led Zeppelin.

Bet he never regretted that one.

Geezer Butler writes ‘Black Sabbath’.

And so heavy metal was born…

Lemmy is kicked out of Hawkwind and forms Motorhead.

The story goes that, in retaliation, Lemmy fucked every member of Hawkwind’s girlfriend. Someone said something about revenge being a dish that’s best served cold once upon a time…

The Ramones’ first London gig spawns a hundred bands, including The Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Damned.

The first punk rock band came from America. It’s a hard one to swallow but the fire, vitriol and spirit that fired the whole movement was born in London at this show.

The first Friday Rock Show is broadcast on Radio One and Tommy Vance became a legend.

Tommy will forever be Britain’s true voice of rock and metal.

Rainbow, Judas Priest and The Scorpions headline the first Monsters Of Rock at Donington in 1980.

There’s always the most exhilarating rush when you step onto the turf at Donington for Download every year, isn’t there? It started on this day.

Paul Di’Anno Leaves Iron Maiden and Bruce Dickinson joins.

The day an already great band became the stuff of legends.

Metallica forms when Lars/James meet through posting classified ads in Recycler looking for bands to join.

Two-pimply outsiders change the world of rock forever via one ad in a San Francisco newspaper.

Dave Mustaine ‘leaves’ Metallica and forms Megadeth.

Dave may have spent years coming to terms with it, but the bottom line is that Megadeth have ruled from their very first record and will go down as one of the greatest metal bands to ever live. Fact.

Rick Rubin produces Slayer’s ‘Reign In Blood’.

29 minutes and 3 seconds of thrash metal perfection.

Al Jourgensen makes a connection between mechanics/factories/Nascar and music and becomes a major catalyst in the creating industrial.

Keyboards can’t be heavy, our arse!

Zakk Wylde auditions for Ozzy Osbourne and replaces the recently deceased Randy Rhoads.

It seemed like Ozzy was finished when he was booted out of Sabbath but he found Randy Rhoads. When it seemed like Ozzy was finished again after Rhoads’ death, it was time for enter Zakk-man.

Anthrax and Public Enemy collaborate for ‘Bring The Noize’.

People will tell you ‘Walk This Way’ started rap-rock. They’re wrong. THIS is the track that spawned Faith No More, Rage Against The Machine, nu-metal…

John Peel discovers Napalm Death and plays them on his Radio One show.

The day it became alright for an extreme band to get airplay on national radio. They’ll never be on drive-time, but Peel proved that there’s a place for them on radio in some way, shape or form.

Tom G Warrior hears Venom and doesn’t know what speed to play it on: starts Celtic Frost, invents doom.

Doom like a motherfucker.

Max Cavelera is lent a tape of Discharge and Celtic Frost, thinks they sound the same, and starts a band that melds the two sounds.

Sepultura be thy name.

Pantera’s Far Beyond Driven goes to number one on the Billboard charts.

Proof that metal of the heaviest variety can take on the masses and win.

Korn shape the sound of nu-metal.

Duh-duh, duh-duh, duh-duh, duh-duh… “Are you ready?”

The Massachusetts movement spawns metalcore.

Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, Overcast, Aftershock…we salute you.

Lamb Of God take groove metal one louder.

The bastard offspring of Slayer and Pantera wlak among us. And they fucking rule!
